Dr. Ed Coats
Explorer & Motivational Speaker
Dr. Ed Coats is a doctor working in obstetrics and acute care but is an extreme sports explorer and motivational and inspirational speaker.
No stranger to taking on challenges having represented Great Britain as a track and field decathlete and led two teams to swim the English Channel for charity; it was in 2009 when he joined James Cracknell and Ben Fogle in the South Pole Race.
Ed beat over 600 applicants and partnered up with Ben and James in a gruelling trek to the South Pole, filmed for the BBC for a 5 part TV series called On Thin Ice. An unbelievably tough journey, Ed talks audiences through the highs and lows of the race and gives a fascinating insight into human endeavour and determination.
Not to be put off by the challenge, Ed embraced the race and took on further quests including 30 challenges for his 30th Birthday, which included a Thames Swim, a Coast to Coast race and an endurance marathon.
Ed has also jointly led a ski expedition to the Geographic North Pole in 2012, which appeared on Channel 5’s ‘North Pole Ice Airport’ and also jointly led a series of ‘Extreme classroom’ projects in the High Arctic and Africa.
The Coldest Classroom on Earth’ and ‘The Hottest Classroom on Earth’ were filmed for BBC World. These projects show that children with challenging behaviour, who are frequently labelled ‘un-teachable,’ engage if taught with the right approach.
