We are very fortunate to work with a number of speakers who have some incredible stories to tell. Whilst it is fantastic to hear their stories firsthand at your events, some of these stories have also either featured in documentaries or become feature-length films.
These are just a few examples of speakers’ stories that have been turned into movies or feature-length documentaries you might like to watch.
Dave Fishwick left school with no qualifications and went on to build six multi-million pound businesses here in the UK and America, he became the Largest supplier of minibusses in the UK and made government and policy-makers, industry regulators, and multinational banks sit up and take notice.
The star of many TV shows including, Channel 4’s ‘The Bank of Dave’ has torn up the rule book and generated huge media and popular interest around the world. An expert on entrepreneurship, business, and finance, he shares the story behind taking on a seemingly impossible challenge, offering valuable lessons for businesses big and small.
David Fishwick founder of Burnley Savings and Loans Ltd, The Bank of Dave, is a charismatic entrepreneur, businessman, investor, author, and philanthropist, and now a Movie star, who has championed UK banking reform through a series of television documentaries and his Sunday Times Bestselling book, Bank of Dave: How I Took On the Banks. His firm belief that ordinary working people should have access to straightforward financial products and services has given him the reputation of a people’s champion, taking on the banks in a ‘Dave and Goliath’ style struggle, winning him recognition from politicians, and worldwide media.
The Bank of Dave Movie is being released in the UK on Netflix on January 16th, 2023. Dave is now in discussions with Netflix about working with them on some exciting new shows.
John Volanthen is a world record-holding British caver and cave diver who has been involved in cave exploration over the last two decades. John began caving with the scouts at the age of 14 and has been at the forefront of cave exploration since combining caving and diving. In 2018, John played a key role in the Tham Luang Thailand cave rescue and was named one of TIME magazine’s “Heroes of the Year.”
John has been involved in exploring and mapping caves throughout the world, including the UK, Europe, and Malaysia, often with dive partner Richard (Rick) Stanton. John attended the Tham Luang incident in Thailand, along with his cave dive partner, Rick Stanton. The duo were able to successfully locate the missing children—something not even special forces were able to do—and then participated in their extraction and successful rescue, leading the team two-and-a-half miles through a flooded dungeon of a cave buried deep inside a mountain. A video of Volanthen and Stanton making initial contact with the team has since gone viral globally.
The film Thirteen Lives was released in 2022 and is available to watch on Amazon Prime.
Joe Simpson, one of the world’s best-known mountaineers, has drawn from his experiences to become a leading author and motivational speaker. “Touching the Void”, the story of his amazing survival, having shattered his leg and been left for dead in a crevasse high in the Andes, has sold over a million copies worldwide.
Following the sale of the movie rights of Touching the Void to Tom Cruise’s and Sally Field’s movie company, the rights to a 90-minute drama documentary were sold to the independent producers Darlow Smithson, working for Channel 4 and PBS. It has been distributed in the UK cinemas by Pathe and in the USA by IFC. The drama documentary film ‘Touching the Void’ won the 2004 Baftas Outstanding British Film of the Year beating ‘Cold Mountain’, ‘Love Actually’ and ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ and The Evening Standard Best Film of the Year 2004. It is now officially the most successful documentary in British cinema history.
Benjamin Mee is an inspiring, and Motivational Speaker and author of “We Bought a Zoo,” which was turned into a Hollywood film starring Matt Damon. When Benjamin and his family found out that Dartmoor Zoo would need to close if a buyer could not be found, they went against everyone else’s advice and bought it.
It was an uphill struggle, not only managing a zoo with all the different needs of the animals but also facing up to the fact that his wife was terminally ill and he needed to care for his two children.
However, through courage, desire, and hard work, Benjamin reopened the zoo to the general public, and remains open to this day. By creating partnerships and collaborations and encouraging sustainability Benjamins’ story is truly unique. It is the story of taking a leap of faith and succeeding against all the odds.
His Book “We Bought a Zoo” was transformed into a film starring Matt Damon.
Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards is an inspiring, fun, and entertaining after-dinner speaker and motivational speaker
Eddie came to the forefront of people’s attention in 1988 when he competed for Great Britain at the Winter Olympics. Despite coming last in the ski jump, Eddie became famous for summing up the Olympic spirit and for his determination to represent his country without any form of funding.
Eddie learned to ski at his local dry ski slope and quickly became an accomplished downhill skier, but missed out on the 1984 Olympics. To realise his dreams and with a shortage of funds and the easier qualification, he decided to switch to ski jumping as there were no other British ski jumpers with whom to compete for a place.
A film about Eddie’s life starring Taron Egerton as Eddie and Hugh Jackman as his trainer was released in 2016 to much acclaim.
