A Woman on Top of the World
Our Book for the Month for March is “A Woman on Top of the World” by Inspirational speaker Maria Conceicao
ABOUT THE BOOK
When she starts to work with Emirates as a flight attendant, it is on one of her many trips around the world, with a stopover in Dhaka that Maria experiences the realities of extreme poverty. She felt an unstoppable desire to help and felt that she could make a difference. She didn’t just see poverty; she also saw potential, especially in the young children of the slums.
Coming from poverty herself, Maria understood the difference that a helping hand could make. She also quickly recognized the need for education. What started as a humble quest, collecting items from friends to take on her return, turned in to something much, much bigger.
“A Woman on Top of the World” tells the story of the many obstacles faced on a journey to fulfill a promise. At one point, with everything about to collapse, Maria was pushed to take extreme measures. She had to step out of her comfort zone to reinvent herself as an athlete, an adventurer, and a mountaineer.
The story is human, real, something we can all relate to. The constant improvement that Maria forces herself through is inspiring. Overall, it is captivating, with highs, lows (some so low that it is truly heartbreaking), but ultimately it’s one of a never-give-up attitude and success.
About Maria
Maria Conceicao is an inspirational speaker and is the first Portuguese Woman to summit Mount Everest, trek to both the North & South Poles and do this all in aid of raising money for a charity she founded herself.
Maria’s life journey took her to Dubai in 2003 when she became a flight attendant at Emirates Airlines. Enjoying the life of Cabin Crew she toured the world visiting places many people could only dream of. In 2005 she took a fateful flight to the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka. It was here she witnessed extreme poverty in the slums of Bangladesh, which was made even more poignant given the life of luxury enjoyed by many in Dubai.
Maria decided to start a charity for those who live in the slums of Bangladesh and she has gone on and helped 101 families and more than 600 children get an education. Among other things, she built one of the most advanced schools in Bangladesh, despite not even having completed grade 6 herself. But after 8 years it all came tumbling down due to matters beyond her control, and Maria has shown great resilience and determination, in finding new ways to get the slum children back to school.
