We Need Some Glen

We Need Some Glen

When I used to work in my previous job, on the occasion we had a hard or tough day, me and my colleague Jean used to say “we need some Glen!” and then played Rhinestone Cowboy by Glen Campbell. Somehow it always made us smile and put us in a good mood.

This was just a tiny thing that helped us out personally, but we work with a number of speakers who speak in depth about mental health/stress and anxiety and some of things they have done to help with their mental health.

ALEX STANIFORTH

Alex Staniforth is a record-breaking adventurer, ICF-trained coach, author, and charity founder from Chester. No stranger to adversity, Alex has overcome more than most will in a lifetime—including surviving the two biggest disasters in Mount Everest history as a teenager. His greatest challenges have been even closer to home: living with epilepsy, stammering, bullying, and mental ill health since childhood. One of Alex talks is –

Mountains in the Mind: Building Mental Fitness to Beat Burnout – High performance isn’t sustainable without managing our well-being too. With a refreshing vulnerability, Alex openly shares his own mental health journey as a young man to encourage open conversations about mental health, whilst challenging the myths and stigma that costs thousands of lives each year. For leaders, supporting the team often starts by putting our hand up first. Drawing from an athlete mindset, Alex shares his mental fitness toolkit so we can manage stress, spot the warning signs of poor mental health, support others and avoid burnout – one small step at a time.

HARRISON WARD

Harrison Ward, perhaps better known as Fell Foodie, is an inspirational mental health speaker honestly highlighting his personal battles with depression, suicidal ideations, alcohol addiction and obesity. He is also known as outdoor cook, recreating restaurant-style meals on camping equipment in remote locations.

Struggling with a clinical depression first appearing in his adolescence, Harrison’s life spiralled out of control as he began to medicate his mind with alcohol. At its worst, he was consuming in excess of 20 pints daily, was a full-time smoker, and had ballooned in weight to over 22 stone. His medicine had become a further poison.

His talk touches on moments of resilience, not being afraid to ask for help, change management, and the power of the outdoors for mental and physical well-being. As well as difficult subjects that may be effecting members of the workforce, directly or indirectly.

SALLY ORANGE

Former British Army Major, multi-record-breaking adventure athlete, passionate mental health campaigner and inspirational speaker Sally Orange MBE has crammed a lot into her 49 years on the planet and she’s nowhere near done. Sally is the only person to complete a marathon on every continent dressed as different pieces of fruit. She has completed 8 full Ironman triathlons and the ‘Escape from Alcatraz’ triathlon, which included swimming across the treacherous waters around the infamous prison. Sally did this dressed in a convict costume to symbolise the way mental illness can make people feel like a prisoner in their own mind.

BEN SMITH

Discover the extraordinary journey of Inspirational Speaker Ben Smith, a story of resilience, transformation, and redefining what’s possible. Ben’s life wasn’t always one of triumph. Struggling with bullying, mental health challenges, and hiding his sexuality, he faced despair that led to two suicide attempts. At 29, a mini-stroke forced him to confront his life head on. But instead of giving up, Ben chose to change everything, turning his pain into a mission that would inspire and uplift thousands.

Ben Smith didn’t just start running, he redefined what endurance means. In 2015, he embarked on The 401 Challenge: running 401 marathons in 401 days across the UK, covering over 10,000 miles and raising more than £330,000 for anti-bullying charities. The impact went beyond the miles. His story of courage touched the hearts of countless people, showing them how to push past their own limits and find strength in the struggle.
